About the artist:
Gerry Gleason, born in Belfast, has been working as an artist for over 40 years. He has had numerous solo exhibitions and been included in many group shows in Ireland, Europe and America. He is a member of the artists’ collective, Queen Street Studios in Belfast, where he still works.
Birdcage was painted during a period when central Belfast was surrounded, or enclosed, by security barriers where civilians and vehicles were searched on entering as a safeguard against bomb attacks. Working in his studio in the centre of the city, the artist, symbolised by the bird in this painting, pondered whether he was being protected or entrapped by the barriers.
