NI Champions is a pilot creative industries project, which saw the Nerve Centre, Culture Northern Ireland, and the NI Skillset Media Academy at the University of Ulster come together to provide work placement opportunities for digital media students
A total of 44 students from HND courses on Moving Image and Interactive Media at North West Regional College and Belfast Metropolitan College took part in several week-long work placements, working on an inspiring ‘real life’ digital media project. Twenty five of their videos were subsequently uploaded to the NI Champions website and YouTube channel, and selected videos also frequently feature on the BBC Big Screens at Belfast's City Hall and Derry~Londonderry's Guildhall Square.
The site profiles Olympians and Paralympians from the north of Ireland past and present in the run up to 2012, as well as artists and projects involved in Northern Ireland’s Cultural Olympiad programme. The project increased students’ technical and life skills, improved their portfolios, and gave them vital work experience in a challenging industry setting. Several students went on to work on paid freelance projects following their work placements.
