Thousands of Young People 'Take It On' at BBC Radio 1 & 1Xtra Academy

During a week-long series of free masterclasses and workshops, the Nerve Centre played host to some of the most influential names in music and entertainment as part of the BBC Radio 1 & 1Xtra Academy.

From May 11-17, over 5,500 young people filed through the Nerve Centre doors to  grab the opportunity to learn new skills in everything from journalism to design, event management to TV production.

Highlights included pupils from a number of schools in the city attending a live broadcast of the Breakfast Show with Nick Grimshaw featuring a special performance from rapper Wretch 32, with Irish rockers The Script playing a special Live Lounge set later in the week.

Other special guests included; Gabrielle Aplin, the cast of EasterEnders, as well as a host of Radio 1 presenters who, throughout the week, broadcasted live from the Nerve Centre. Acts from across Northern Ireland including Derry~Londonderry talent, SOAK, Little Bear, Wonder Villains, Wydling, and Ryan Vail, also had their chance to shine, gracing the Nerve Centre stage for BBC Introducing Live.

Nerve Centre project manager, Emma McDermott said: ‘This was a fantastic opportunity for the young people of Derry-Londonderry to learn about the creative industries from some of the best in the field. It's not everyday that you get to ask Gabrielle Aplin questions on how to make music, produce features and music mixes for Radio 1 shows or design a 16ft backdrop for a Live Lounge with The Script.

Inspiring young people, and giving them the skills, to get involved in creative industries is at the heart of what we do at the Nerve Centre, so staging the academy here was an ideal fit. We hope to build on the legacy of the BBC Radio 1 and 1Xtra Academy by continuing to host regular training days aimed at giving taster sessions to those who would like to further their skills in the creative industries'.
