Set The Stage Soundtracks Launch of New Citywide Art Exhibition

Young local creatives from the Nerve Centre’s Set the Stage initiative programmed their own music event around the launch of 'somewhere_framed', a new public art exhibition showcasing the works of over 50 young emerging artists and designers that has ‘popped-up’ in unique venues across Derry~Londonderry.

Taking place in Foyleside Shopping Centre, one of the participating venues which showcases an eclectic mix of work from local artists aged between 16-25, the event saw performances from Riot Upstairs, The Docs, Jason Flynn and Cahal O'Connell - all artists who've engaged with Nerve Centre's various music development programmes.

Led by the Nerve Centre, a somewhereto_ delivery partner in Northern Ireland, somewhereto_framed will run for one month. As an unconventional approach to regular exhibitions, the project invites members of the public to join them on a unique digital and real life experience, which takes the observer on an interactive location- spotting journey across the city. Other particpating venues include LegenDerry Warehouse No.1, Café Nervosa, Café Del Mondo and The Sandwich Company.

Seventeen year old Anna Crawford from Maghera is one of the artists showcasing work as part of somewhereto_framed. 'Art is sometimes such a private and personal thing making it hard to reveal in public, and I haven't really had the confidence to do so before now. Through this exhibition I've already had such a positive response to my work and that truly is so touching and inspiring to me. The future seems bright!'

The somewhereto_ project, which offers young people aged 16-25 years old access to free spaces in their communities to pursue creative and enterprising endeavours, received a £7m grant from the Big Lottery Fund in 2012. It officially launched its partnership with the Nerve Centre in Foyleside Shopping Centre last Saturday (April 11).

Fergal Rafferty, Foyleside Centre Manager said: 'Everyone is aware of the city’s undoubted depth of talent, and Foyleside is delighted to be part of a project that gives local emerging artists space to be discovered. Our shoppers had the opportunity to experience something a little bit different whilst they browsed on Saturday, and you never know, we might discover the next U2 or Van Gogh.'

Joe Carlin, somewhere_to regional delivery partner at Nerve Centre said: ‘This is a fantastic opportunity for young people to get their work exhibited in unique spaces, completely for free! We’re delighted with the response to date and look forward to opening more spaces soon. If you’d like to get involved either as an artist or venue, please get in touch via'
