Nerve Centre Takes Home Two Accolades at Creative & Cultural Skills Awards

The Nerve Centre’s work with young people in film and music was acknowledged at the inaugural Northern Ireland Creative and Cultural Skills Awards held in Belfast last week (Friday 27 November).

The Creative Learning team took home the top award for ‘NI Education and Industry Partnership’ for the work of the BFI Academies in Nerve Centre, Nerve Belfast and AMMA Centre across Northern Ireland.

The Nerve Centre BFI Academy is in an intensive programme of skills development, industry masterclasses, practical production, final showcase event and a joint careers conference with a range of industry figures.

John Peto, Director of Education at Nerve Centre said: ‘The partnership with BFI, through the Academy, brings almost 60 young filmmakers into our Northern Ireland Academies, and in direct contact with industry professionals. The masterclasses and mentoring sessions really move filmmaking into a practical realm for the students, encouraging a pragmatic approach to their work and really developing a real-world few of filmmaking as a career, rather than simply a passion. The recognition from Creative and Cultural Skills that this Award brings is a terrific validation, not just of the young people that are the lifeblood of the Academies, but of the local film industry in supporting us so enthusiastically.’

The music team was also awarded Highly Commended in the ‘Northern Ireland Creative Choices Award’ for the SYNC project set-up in 2013, which has already engaged thousands of young musicians through performance opportunities and training.

Sara Graham, Nations Director, Creative & Cultural Skills: ‘As the creative and cultural industries become increasingly important to the NI economy, it’s essential that we recognise and develop new talent.  The Northern Ireland Creative & Cultural Skills Awards allow us to do that; celebrating the outstanding work happening within industry and education that is so vital to the sector’s ongoing success. The judges were very impressed by entries and we are delighted for Nerve Centre and BFI winning the NI Industry and Education Partnership Award.’
