Nerve Centre Launches Free Digital Animation iBook

Building on the legacy of Derry~Londonderry's year as City of Culture and 2013's Digital Book of Kells project, Nerve Centre's Creative Learning Centre has launched its first free iBook resource for teachers.

Designed for Apple iOS operating systems and devices, 'Creating Animation in the Classroom: A Step By Step Interactive Handbook From The Nerve Centre' is a foolproof guide through the process of creating quality animation in the classroom or at home.

Packed with helpful hints and feedback from teachers, the iBook gives educators everywhere the tools to unlock the creative potential of all their learners, from story planning, creating characters and convincing backdrops to camera setup, managing the shoot and finally adding sound and editing.

The resource is available now as a free download from the iTunes iBook store.

In 2013, Nerve Centre's Creative Learning Centre gave over 900 school children the opportunity to create an animated 'Digital Book of Kells' for the 21st century, as part of the Derry~Londonderry City of Culture celebrations. The experience of successes and challenges encountered in nearly 40 classrooms along the way informed and inspired this book.

Photographs from behind the scenes of the project, audio clips and Creative Learning Centre templates for teaching and learning present a host of interactive movies, galleries, worksheets and advice. In addition, some teachers involved have contributed words of advice as a sample animation 'web' showing links across the NI curriculum at Key Stage 2 to help users get started. Tried and tested, this structured guide aims to provide a framework for introducing and developing creative, digital, collaborative, assessable skills into today’s working classroom.

The Creative Learning Centres deliver training, guidance and resources to over 5000 teachers and 7000 young people each year across Northern Ireland. Funded by the Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure and Northern Ireland Screen, the Creative Learning Centres work out of the Nerve Centre in Derry~Londonderry, Nerve Belfast and the AMMA Centre in Armagh. The work of the Creative Learning Centres can be viewed at www.futureclassrooms.org.
