This full day session will cover the key areas of study for the revised AS examination - Alfred Hitchcock and the Classical Hollywood Style and Formalism: Early European Cinema and American Expressionism. The Chief Examiner will detail the Learning Outcomes of the new AS specification and the support materials available, including the specimen examination and fact sheets. The session will explore approaches to teaching the subject content and preparing candidates for the online examination.

Teaching MIA on a budget - Darren Gibson

A practical guide to teaching Moving Image Arts on a budget: Darren Gibson has been teaching Moving Image Arts since 2006. He is responsible for the creation and development of the highly successful MIA department at Lisneal College. During this time Darren has devised a number of effective techniques for the delivery of this subject to students with a wide range of abilities. In this session Darren will demonstrate how to create a high quality product with limited resources as well as exploring strategies for success in the classroom and how he manages the MIA syllabus to ensure students maximise their potential in the subject.

MIA Screen Writing & Ideas Generation - Darren Gibson

Wednesday 15th June 13.30 - 15.30

Darren's extensive screenwriting career has produced several critically acclaimed films including the locally set Stumpy's Brae which opened the Foyle film festival in 2013. Darren has developed a set of simple guidelines for successful screenwriting, which he feels can enhance the work of students and those who would like to begin writing for TV and Film.

Sound for Film

Thursday 16th June 09.30 - 15.30

Participants will learn the fundamental principles of capturing sound on location and how to achieve the most professional results using the equipment most widely-used in education and industry. Teachers will then develop their understanding of the theory with practical, hands-on exercises using audio editing and multi-tracking software to create and enhance their film through post-production.

Editing with Final Cut

Thursday 16th June 09.30 - 15.30

Final Cut training for Moving Image Arts teachers, is designed to take participants from a basic understanding of the programs capabilities to a more advanced knowledge with practical real world experience. Tutors will guide teachers through new workflows, toolsets and features to provide a solid foundation from which to build their visual storytelling skills. The course will be a mix of instructional and hands-on exercises designed to provide participants with the skills to create edits based on dialogue, storytelling and music.

After Effects

Friday 17th June 09.30 - 15.30

This teacher professional development course suitable for MIA teachers, will focus on the post-production skills used in film. Participants will explore the basic interface and learn how to use the software through practical exercises as well as developing an understanding of the skills used for colour matching clips, colour grading and how to create an animated title sequence. These exercises will primarily focus on the principles of animation, which can be applied to the MIA specification.
