LightsOUT! Switches On at the Nerve Centre for Outburst Queer Arts

Get your popcorn ready - OUTBURST ARTS, Northern Ireland's lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender arts initiative, is hitting the Nerve Centre in Derry~Londonderry for LightsOUT! a celebration of LGBT and Queer Cinema on Tour, in association with Foyle Film Festival.

Supported by Film Hub NI, LightsOUT! is bringing some great international LGBT films to local screens around Northern Ireland, along with LGBT film related performances.

Outburst will be screening four films in Derry~Londonderry on Friday June 27 and Saturday 28, the highlight of which will be a screening of My Prairie Home, the Sundance Film Festival-acclaimed documentary about Rae Spoon, a transgender/gender- neutral country singer who grew up in an Evangelical family in rural Canada.

Rae has performed on stage with the likes of Emmylou Harris and Natalie Merchant and has just this week been nominated alongside Arcade Fire for Canada’s prestigious Polaris Music Prize. We are thrilled that Rae will be joining us at the Nerve Centre to introduce the film and to play a live set of country-electronica straight after.

Other films over the weekend include The Punk Singer, a rousing new film about Riot Grrl icon Kathleen Hanna; GBF, the hilarious big gay comedy hit of the year and Stranger By The Lake, the stunning 2013 Cannes Award Winning erotic thriller.

Outburst Arts’ Artistic Director, Ruth McCarthy, said: 'We’re so excited to be teaming up with Foyle Film Festival at the Nerve Centre to bring brilliant new queer cinema to Derry for Film Hub NI. The local music scene here is incredibly vibrant, so we’re especially excited to be presenting two new music related films as part of the programme. Rae’s gig promises to be really special and we think their story is one that will resonate with a lot of people here. LightsOut! is more than just a celebration of LGBT stories, it’s about world-class cinema and we’d love everyone to come along'.
