Hollywood Selfies Season Rolls On at Nerve Centre

The Foyle Film Festival’s Hollywood Selfies season at the Nerve Centre continues with a showcase of eclectic films that extol the wonders, and expose the horrors of the Dream Factory that spawned them.

From Mulholland Drive to Map to the Stars, all of the films running through May represent some of the entertainment industry’s most amusing, astute, and enduring looks inward.

First to screen is two-time Oscar® winner LA Confidential on Wednesday, May 6. With 1950’s Los Angeles as the seedy backdrop, the intricate noir-ish tale of police corruption and Hollywood sleaze stars Russell Crowe, Kevin Spacey and Danny DeVito, among others. It’ll be followed by Boogie Nights the next evening (May 7), the sprawling tale of the rise and fall of a porn superstar named Dirk Diggler.

Two of Hollywood’s finest actors, Robert De Niro and Dustin Hoffman come together for the political satire film Wag the Dog on Wednesday, May 13. The plot follows a spin doctor (De Niro) and a movie producer (Hoffman) as they cook up a fake war in order to whip the American public into a patriotic frenzy and, incidentally, distract them from a Presidential sex scandal.

The season wouldn’t be complete without featuring The Artist (May 27), an utterly beguiling silent, black-and-white celebration of early Hollywood, that had its Northern Ireland Premiere at the Foyle Film Festival in 2011, before going on to win five Oscars® in 2012. This is another chance to see it in all its glory on the big screen alongside, Adaptation, Gods and Monsters and Lost in Translation.
