Free Professional Development Courses For Teachers This Summer

ICT - Integrating Creative Technology
 
Monday 17th August 2015 09.30 - 16.00
 
This full day workshop will explore good practice in the integration of technology to support curriculum delivery. We will look at models developed in partnership with local Primary and Post Primary schools to support and enhance teaching and learning across the curriculum, as well as identifying benefits and challenges in your own school context. The focus will be on how technology and creativity go hand-in-hand in developing teaching and learning strategies and supporting opportunities for pupils to progress their thinking skills and personal capabilities. 
Teachers are encouraged to bring an existing topic planner/scheme of work or even idea around which you will be supported to begin developing planning.

Interactive Design
 
Tuesday 18th August 2015 09.30 – 16.00
 
This Interactive Design workshop will cover using Scratch in the classroom at Key Stage 2. Learn the particular code blocks that define the different levels within Key Stage 2. Using a variety of short projects we will progress step by step through the different levels as outlined in the UICT Interactive Design Desirable Feature guidelines to give a better understanding of how to develop projects to match pupils’ levels of progress. This training is pitched at beginner – intermediate level.

3D CAD to 3D Printing - Developing Skills with Autodesk Pro Inventor
 
Tuesday 18th August 2015 09.30 – 16.00
 
Autodesk has released Inventor free to educators and students and this course will provide an opportunity to become familiar with some of its features as well as taking design ideas through to manufacture using a 3D printer.  Participants will learn to use the basic functionality of Autodesk Inventor, manipulate file types to interact with other applications and understand the 3D printing process and use a 3D printer to manufacture components.

INTO FILM - Raising Literacy Attainment with Film
 
Wednesday 19th August 2015 09.30 – 12.30
 
The first of two on offer, this workshop will explore the role of film as a powerful means for pupil engagement and developing learners’ critical thinking, analytical and contextualisation skills. This session will look at how understanding film language, camera shots, roles and storytelling skills can support and deepen learning across the curriculum. The workshop will present teachers with tools and exercises for classroom practice, delving into how learners can develop transferable skills through decoding contexts and translating images and sound into words.

INTO FILM - Film Making with iPads
 
Wednesday 19th August 2015 13.30 – 16.30
 
The second workshop of the day looks at filmmaking as a teaching tool to encourage deep and active learning and facilitating young people to take responsibility for their own learning. Through developing communication, critical thinking and problem solving skills, filmmaking can improve group work, creative and technical skills as well as curricular attainment. This session will explore a range of strategies and activities for children and young people aged 5-19. This hands-on training will give educators a brief introduction to film making and animation, describe ways of planning a film (involving storyboarding and shoebox design) and apply film making techniques such as Record and Playback and the 5,4,3,2,1 technique.

Post Production Refresh
 
Thursday 20th August 2015 14.00 – 16.30
 
This hands-on workshop will give teachers an opportunity to brush up on their editing skills using iMovie for iPad. Covering skills needed to deliver on Using ICT Film&Animation/Working With Moving Images, this refresher session will focus on the post production elements of film. Revisit splitting and trimming video clips to adding text and transitions, as well as looking at some of the creative opportunities offered by the more advanced features in the iMovie app. We will also explore ways to enhance pupils’ films by sourcing appropriate copyright-free sound effects and developing their own music/audio assets using the GarageBand app.

Animating with iPads
 
Friday 21st August 2015 09.30 – 16.00
 
This full day course will give a hands-on overview of the animation process from planning to post production. Explore breaking down a story or topic into suitable sections for animation, storyboarding techniques, using camera shots to tell a ‘story’, how to make the best use of your iPad camera and using apps for animation and editing. There will also be an opportunity to discuss tips for making animation work in the classroom context at your key stage and leading pupils through the animation process.
