City of Culture Musician-in-Residence Gives First Major Performance

Music lovers will get the chance to hear the City of Culture 2013 Musician-in-Residence Neil Cowley for themselves on Saturday, May 4, when his award-winning jazz trio performs at the Nerve Centre as part of the Derry City Jazz Festival.

It’s the first time Cowley, who has been back and forward to Derry~Londonderry since February working with young people and community groups as part of a year-long residency, will be performing in the city.

The musician, who has worked with artists such as Adele, Emeli Sandé and the Stereophonics, will also be giving a master class with ten talented young pianists in Henderson Piano Showroom, as well as collaborative workshops with local musicians, producers and singer-songwriters.

Cowley said: ‘I’m looking forward to meeting the next generation of pianists coming through and collaborating with local musicians. I’ve been amazed at the talent I’ve found here so far.

Hopefully I’ll be able to reveal a few tips on taking an audience on a journey as a performer and offer some advice on technique, dynamics, feel and harmony. I’m also delighted to be bringing my Trio to the city as part of my residency.’

The Neil Cowley trio, recently voted UK Jazz Artist of the Year, are just one of a number of big names performing at the Nerve Centre during the Jazz Festival.

Described as ‘not to be missed’ by Rolling Stone magazine, the New Orleans based Soul Rebels will get the crowds swinging on Thursday, May 2.

The eight-piece brass ensemble embraces the rich jazz traditions of their homeland, with life-affirming vocals and hip-shaking grooves. Having collaborated with names such as Metallica, Green Day, Snoop Dogg and Kanye West, the New Orleans superstars are sure to perform a storming set.

The weekend will come to an end with the mellow grooves of Jerry Fish and band on Sunday, May 5. One of Ireland’s most enigmatic songwriters, Jerry’s versatility has been showcased in collaborations with Imelda May, Iggy Pop and Damien Rice. Expect a mash up of punk Latino, swaggering vocals, witty lyrics and smiles aplenty.

Tickets for all events are currently on sale at the Nerve Centre box office, Ticket Master outlets and wegottickets.com.
