Award-Winning Jazz Pianist Neil Cowley Continues On His Musical Journey With Derry~Londonderry Musicians

Award-winning jazz pianist Neil Cowley will bring the curtain down on his year as UK City of Culture musician in residence with a grand finale concert in the city’s Guildhall on Saturday, December 7.

Premiering an entirely new suite of music ‘The Eighth Gate’ for his closing performance, Neil will be joined by his hit Trio and a host of local talent for a unique musical collaboration. Five-piece band Balkan Alien Sound and the Ibuki Taiko drummers will bring their collective mix of international sound to the stage, alongside acclaimed chamber choir Codetta, for this one-off performance.
Revered for his ability to tell stories through his dynamic music and, inspired by his year-long residency in Derry~Londonderry, Cowley and his collaborators will take the audience on a thrilling musical journey through ‘The Eighth Gate’, from poignant, reflective moments to powerful pulsating interludes.

‘The story of The Eighth Gate came from the city’s walled and gated heritage,' Cowley explains. ‘I thought it would be a marvellous thing to create a sort of sonic tapestry, created by the everyday people of Derry~Londonderry. A gate for the future, a marker in time as to what it means to be in the city.

‘As I draw closer to my musical conclusion of 2013, I realise this piece is my small gift to the city and I hope that the love and affection with which it's written will act as a kind of mirror reflecting back on the people of the city.’

The concert will mark the end of Cowley’s UK City of Culture residency, which has been a partnership between PRS for Music Foundation, Culture Company and the Nerve Centre. During his time in Derry~Londonderry, he has worked alongside many community groups and schools as part of the Music Promise project, formed a specially assembled choir, hosted numerous jamming workshops with bands and artists and, mentored 15 year-old Darrell Smith from Lisneal College. With Neil’s encouragement and support, Darrell played his self-penned piece as an opener to one of the Trio’s most recent shows in front of a packed audience.

Pearse Moore, chief executive of the Nerve Centre, said: ‘Neil's been a fantastic ambassador for the city during 2013. He has had a hugely positive impact on many young people and musicians throughout the city.

‘Not only have we experienced two unforgettable performances at the Nerve Centre during the Jazz festival and St Augustine's during Music City, but as the City of Culture musician in residence Neil has been the musical heartbeat of the Nerve Centre and our SYNC programme, inspiring, engaging and encouraging countless young musicians.

‘The Nerve Centre can’t wait until his performance on December 7 to hear a world exclusive of the new music he has created during his time here.’

Neil Cowley will perform ‘The Eighth Gate’ at The Guildhall, Derry-Londonderry, on Saturday, December 7. Tickets are available from Nerve Centre, Ticketmaster and WeGotTickets.
