Animate Shines at The MAC

Animate Shines at The MAC

Animate, delivered by the Nerve Centre for Northern Ireland Screen, was one of six arts projects from across Northern Ireland to celebrate three years of work with a day of free arts workshops and performances at The MAC on Saturday September 1.

In 2009, Legacy Trust UK challenged local arts organisations to develop a series of new community projects that would connect art and sport. The result was the Connections programme.

As part of this unique programme, the Nerve Centre's BAFTA-nominated animator John McCloskey has mentored ten teenage participants through the animation process. Through a series of workshops and masterclasses with industry professionals including Avatar and Harry Potter animator Greg Maguire, the students created a short animated film exploring the link between sports and arts in honour of the London 2012 Olympics (see below).

Over the past three years Connections has produced a packed programme of activities, workshops and public events delivered by the Nerve Centre, Beam Creative Network, Echo Echo Dance Theatre Company and the Verbal Arts Centre, alongside Northern Ireland Screen, Open Arts and The Beat Initiative.

The London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) will feature Animate at its conference in London later this month.
